Understanding Genetic Modification

UCAS Code: Book direct with the University
Duration: 1900-2100 Thursdays for 10 weeks

Intro

Genetic modification (GM) is one of today's most prominent cutting-edge areas of modern science, and one that is associated with a panoply of ethical concerns. GM science is the basis for a wide range of burgeoning technologies, including agricultural plant and animal modification, modern medical drug production, and gene therapy. Developments in GM science are also bringing closer highly radical possibilities, such as 'gene doping' in sport and so-called 'designer babies'. This short course introduces the underlying scientific basis of GM, and goes on to cover specific applications, with the ethical aspects emphasised throughout. Presented by Dr Kevin Smith, an academic who has published widely in GM science and ethics. Class format: lectures and discussion-based tutorials. Assessed by assignment (for CPD purposes).
This course is aimed at education professionals (particularly secondary or primary school teachers), for whom the course will count as CPD; and members of the public who wish to learn more.
