Brief Description
A wide ranging examination of operating systems and how they manage the differing requirements of users, hardware, networks and software.

Aim
The aim of this Module is to provide the student with : An understanding of the operation of computer hardware and the functionality of operating systems and networks.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module the student should be able to :
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the function of key components of an operating system.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the function and inter-relationship of key components of an computer.
3. Describe the components of a computer system and how they operate in the context of supporting program execution.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of operation of networking components and protocols.
5. Select appropriate networking components to configure a small Microsoft Windows network to a given specification.

Indicative Content

1. Computer Hardware
Overview of motherboard architecture, main memory and the BIOS.Overview of methods of data storage, hard drive operation, formatting, and partitions.
2. Representating Information
Data types (Ints, Floats, Doubles, Chars, etc.), how they are stored and their limitations. Using Decimal, Hexadecimal and Binary.
3. Modern operating systems
Single-user vs. multi-user; interactive vs. non- interactive systems; multiprogramming, multi- processing, time-sharing systems; real-time.
4. File Management
File access system calls; file permissions; secondary storage management; file system implementation.
5. Resource Management
Processor scheduling; memory management; swapping; virtual memory systems.
6. The hardware interface
Memory; input/output; interrupts; direct memory access; peripherals.
7. The user interface
Graphical Interfaces and principles of HCI e.g. Microsoft Windows
8. Networking Fundamentals
Architecture: circuit and packet switched networks; Copper, fibre and wireless media. Effects of media on bandwidth and data throughput. Review of hubs, switches and routers and their advantages/disadvantages in a network configuration
9. Network Layers
OSI model vs TCP/IP. Data segmentation and encapsulation. Use of MAC and IP addresses by network switches and routers. TCP and UDP protocols. Class based networks, allocation of IP address and their identification. Need for and determination of subnets and subnet masks.
10. Network Routing
Static vs dynamic routing. Routing protocols and their principle of operation. Standard link state and distance vector protocols.

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment
In order to achieve the learning outcomes there is a high element of practical work (67%) supported by a series of lecture/tutorials (33%) to support and underpin the principles and operation of Computers, their Operating Systems and Networks. The assessment is designed to reflect the work done, and the ability shown, in the laboratory. The independent self-study time assists the student in understanding and absorbing the module content. The module will be delivered by an integrated programme of lectures/tutorials and practical work with all the supporting material, such as lecture notes, slides, lab and tutorial sheets being available on the University's Portal. The learning outcomes will be assessed by students gathering "evidence of achievement" in their Portfolios, which will consist of feedback from coursework and tutorial assessments.

Brief Description
This module introduces students to fundamental database concepts, i.e. design theory and implementation. It allows students to explore relational database management software in depth from a practical perspective, including relational modelling and SQL.

Aim
To provide the student with an understanding of the fundamental concepts of effective database design and practical experience and skills in the implementation of effective databases, which enable business decision making.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module the student should be able to :
1. Design conceptual and logical relational database models.
2. Implement relational databases with effective functionality and user- friendly interfaces using an RDBMS, SQL and QBE.
3. Evaluate the relevant legal and user requirements for a given database implementation.

Indicative Content

1. Database Essentials
Introduction to the features of a DBMS using Microsoft Access: tables, data definition, primary keys, overview of other database objects.
2. Legal Constraints
Data Protection Act, privacy etc.
3. Relational Modelling
Update anomalies with poor design. Entities and relationships, and how to model them in a relational database: Using foreign and primary keys together, entity and referential integrity.
4. Entity-Relationship modelling and mapping
Designing entity relationship models (Conceptual Model) and mapping them to a relational model (Logical Model).
5. SQL Data Definition Language
Creating tables, inserting data, PK, FK and Check constraints.
6. Querying: QBE and SQL
Defining simple and complex queries using QBE. Advanced features, parameter and update queries. Using SQL SELECT to retrieve information from single or multiple tables in a relational database. Embedding SQL in forms etc.
7. Data Dictionary
Finding information about the meta¿data by querying the Data Dictionary. Practical uses : e.g. by creating a form that allows users to select a query to run.
8. Model Protection and Validation
Safeguarding databases against accidental damage, ensuring data quality with data validation, protecting forms. Testing database integrity.
9. Interface Design, Database Forms and Reports
Customising forms for data entry. Report layout for presentation of information. Good practice. Building a customised GUI using forms with advanced functionality. Placing events on forms to perform actions.
10. Interoperability
Interfacing databases with other applications: ODBC. Using Oracle or MySQL together with Access.

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Each week, students attend a one hour lectorial (delivered to the whole class) and two a hour practical lab. The labs are held in 4506 in large groups with one tutor for approx. 20 students. If possible, use room 3004 for lectorials. Both Microsoft Access and a client server RDBMS (such as Oracle or MySQL) are used to allow students to gain practical experience on a variety of platforms and explore similarities and differences, as well as linking both through ODBC. TARGET 5 The interactive lectorials explore theoretical aspects of the module, while labs provide opportunity for enquiry and project based learning (67% of total class contact). Each topic is initially explored through a set of practical exercises and then applied to a larger case study. END TARGET 5 TARGET 7 Students work with two DBMS, Oracle and Access. Comprehensive support is provided using the Blackboard VLE. END TARGET 7

Additional Assessment Information
The exam will be an open book online examination which also contains some paper based written content. For the portfolio, students will gradually build up a database application for a case study, different elements of this will be demonstrated and marked during appropriate lab sessions. Final submission will be a short (1 page) report in which the student summarises their databse application and reflects on possible enhancements. Marking in labs will be by the module tutor or lab assistants qualified to at least degree level.

5. Primitive data types
Recognition of the need for, and syntax of, different basic types. Development of simple programs using primitive data types.

Creation of new methods derived from prescribed designs. Development of methods with a range of return types and parameters.
7. Objects
Consideration of interface to objects, data stored within objects and associated functionality. Extension to the function and data capacity of familiar objects.

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment
TARGET 5 = 66% of class contact time will be spent on active enquiry or project work. The lectures make up only 33% of the class contact; the remaining class contact is practical class. During the practical class the students are given programming problems to solve. Students need to enhance their learning from the lectures by searching for and reading external online material in order to be able to solve the problems set. This module employs a problem-first and practice-led learning approach. Software development techniques and methodologies are introduced in the context of developing a solution to a problem. An awareness of the generic applicability of these approaches will emerge from repeated application of the techniques in different contexts, and this activity will constitute approximately 75% of the contact time. This module is underpinned by creative technologies that allow stepwise development of solutions to problems with confirmation of the correct creation of an implementation at each stage, enabling independent investigation and development of solutions in stages determined by the student. Many aspects of the software development process will require exploration of material beyond the core learning material provision and students must incorporate self- discovered knowledge into their development approach. All documentation will require an account of the software development process including a reflection on challenges faced and the solutions developed within the software development process. END TARGET TARGET 7 = A customised web site, updated weekly, provides a gateway for students to access learning resources electronically. This site holds copies of the lecture notes, practical tasks and assessment specification. In addition links to external electronic materials gives a starting point for students independent learning. Aim
The aim of this Module is to provide the student with the ability to develop simple programs that illustrate the use of object oriented techniques in interfacing devices to computers

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module the student should be able to :
1. Demonstrate the standard interfaces used to connect devices to a Personal Computer
2. Demonstrate the concept and operation of simple sensor devices
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the use of a software object to provide an interface to a hardware device by writing simple applications using such an object

Indicative Content

1. Computer Interfaces
Consideration of the standard hardware and software interfaces of a Personal Computer
2. The standard software model
The standard programming model as described by properties, methods and events
3. Interface boards and technologies
Development of the idea of the Interface board, such as a DAQ, and it's connection to the PC using the USB interface
4. Sensors
Development of the idea of sensors and use of simple types such as those for position, temperature and light intensity.
5. Output devices
Development of the idea of output devices and use of simple types such as LEDs and DC motors
6. Datalogging
Creation of an application using the interface board which will perform a signal monitoring and logging function; including alarm generation.
7. Simple graphics
The development of simple graphics to enhance the datalogging application
8. Additional novel devices
Introduce a few devices which are current and of interest such as the Wii mote; discussing the operation and interfacing.

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment
TARGET 5 = 66% of class contact time will be spent on active enquiry or project work. The lectures make up 33% of the class contact; the remaining class contact is practical work. During the practical section of the class the students are given problems to solve which involve the use of devices and software development tools to make the devices function. Students need to enhance their learning from the lectures by searching for and reading external online material in order to be able to solve the problems set. This is demonstrated in the practical sessions. END TARGET TARGET 7 = A customised web site, updated weekly, provides a gateway for students to access learning resources electronically. This site holds copies of the lecture notes, practical tasks and assessment specification. In addition links to external electronic materials and Abertay Wiki pages gives a starting point for student’s independent learning. END TARGET

This module builds on the concepts learned in Introductory Programming, integrating fundamental programming building blocks with more advanced concepts.

Aim
To enable the student to develop programs that demonstrate the defining features of the object oriented paradigm.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module the student should be able to :
1. Implement solutions,using an object-oriented programming language, to simple problems.
2. Demonstrate the use of standard object libraries in the construction of software solutions.

1. Review of fundamental concepts
Review of the use of control structures and primitive data types.
2. Types and references
Highlighting the way in which primitive types and objects are stored and accessed.
3. Collections and other abstract data structures
Using some of the abstract data structures provided by libraries to model internal data.
4. Arrays and Strings
Using arrays within a program to represent data. Discussion of string objects and the methods available to manipulate strings.
5. Objects, polymorphism and inheritance
Overview of classes emphasising their role in encapsulation and inheritance.
6. Exception handling
Understand the concept of exception handling and use this within a piece of software.
7. File IO
Making use of File IO to store data between executions of a program.
8. Event handling
Managing events in programs with simple graphical user interfaces.

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment
A one hour lecture each week will introduce the topic (for that week). There will follow 2 two hour practical sessions each week, supervised for 1.5 hours. The idea of three contact points each week for each student is to attempt to improve attendance and engagement with the module. Each practical session will mix taught examples with set exercises, supported by at least two staff. This provides ad hoc formative feedback whilst reinforcing the concepts introduced in the lecture. Structured and explicit formative feedback is provided via the assessment strategy outlined below, and a summative grade determined from combining formative grades. TARGET 5 = 75% of class contact time will be spent on active enquiry or project work. The lectures make up only 25% of the class contact; the remaining class contact is lab-based practical work. During the practical class the students are given programming problems to solve. Students need to enhance their learning from the lectures by searching for and reading online material in order to be able to solve the problems set. The process of programming is, by its nature, an active and enquiry-led process in that students will be continuously designing and implementing solutions that require to be tested, evaluated and refined in the light of the knowledge and experiences gained. END TARGET TARGET 7 = A customised web site provides a gateway for students to access learning resources electronically. This site holds copies of the lecture notes, practical tasks and assessment specification. In addition students will require to refer to online reference material on the .Net class library and C# language in order to fully utilise the programming concepts presented in class in the context of producing a solution to the assessment. The Visual Studio environment in which students develop their programs also exposes certain features that facilitate the students' exploration of the language and operating framework. END TARGET

3. The Relevant Legal Framework
Data Protection Act, Computer Misuse Act, copyright and intellectual property.

Overview of the process by which an area is investigated and materials identified and utilised.
5. Literacy skills & academic reading
Revision and development of skills to identify resources from library and appropriate Internet resource bases, including citation searches. Example led consideration of how to read, summarise and synthesise resources.
6. Report structure and case studies
Presentation of a template structure for reports. Example reports to inform report development.

TARGET 5 = 95% of this module will be based upon active enquiry and project work. The assessment will allow students to explore in depth a self-selected area of interest to develop understanding of legal and professional issues in this area. Research methods, study skills and reporting approaches with substantial written work, will be developed throughout. The majority of contact time will focus on enabling the students to explore their field of study and research areas of knowledge required to support project work. This project work will provide the opportunity for substantial independent study. Students will be required to create documentation that reflects substantial engagement with a particular area of study. END TARGET. An opportunity both to develop the practice of OO programming and to practise programming. The term "programming" is used here in its wider sense to encapsulate architecturing, design, implementation and coding. You will investigate a number of programming-focused case studies, reviewing some supplied code, adding in missing code, and reflecting on what is going on. In the process you will meet a number of object- oriented programming concepts, algorithms and technologies that u can use in your own software development.

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Programming concepts, algorithms and techniques are presented in the context of case studies. Students review these case studies and complete missing design/implementations. Lectures present theoretical material and set up the case studies; practicals facilitate students interaction with the lecturer and their peers in reviewing the case studies. Attendance at practicals is mandatory to ensure progress is satisfactory; ongoing engagement will contribute to the coursework grade. Students must complete the identified work each week in their own time. Solutions to some case study exercises are published to provide formative feedback. TARGET 5 = 66% of class contact time will be spent on active enquiry case study work in practicals. These are directed by structured activities that require the student to review, analyse and synthesise through a case study. Some practical sessions are designated as clinics in which students previous enquiries can be discussed with staff. The software construction landscape is large and extensive so that lecture material can only present so much detail and is more concerned with establishing a base framework in which detail can be added through independent study. The case studies must be reviewed, considered and experimented with in order to engage fully with the material and its practical applications; this is a learner-centerd activity. This independent study, together with the taught material, will need to be synthesised in order to have a full understanding of the module content; this will allow the student to tackle the assessments in a meaningful manner. Brief Description
Manipulation of the BOM and DOM with JavaScript to create client-side functionality. Introduction to dynamic web pages using an application server.

Aim
The aim of this Module is to provide the student with the necessary skills to enable them to develop an Internet site that utilises client- side JavaScript techniques and simple server-side techniques.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module the student should be able to :
1. Demonstrate an understanding of client side functionality that can provide well-structured and usable applications.
2. Compare the use of CSS and Javascript within web pages.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the underlying Document Object Model within web pages, and implement foundational methods of manipulating content via the DOM.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of simple server side scripting, and produce web pages that connect an application to a database, work with data and display data.

1. Overview of Client Side Scripting
JavaScript's bad reputation. DHTML preceived as bad practice, DOM perceived as good practice. Major scripting standards. The Browser Object Model and the Document Object Model. Syntax and features. Browser (in)compatibilities, security issues and common speed and load issues. Running and testing scripts.
2. The DOM
Abstraction. Reaching Nodes - getelementById and getElementByTagName. Attributes of nodes - data, nodeName, nodeType, nodeValue, getAttribute (attribute). Working with nodes - document.createTextNode etc, child nodes, parent nodes, sibling nodes, etc.
3. JavaScript Procedural Programming
Script tags. Statements, expressions and operators, line termination and the semicolon. Variables. Comments in JavaScript.

Aim
To provide the student with the necessary skills to enable them to implement a structured, highly accessible, standards-compliant web site. Also, to enable the student to convert exsisting web pages into standards-compliant versions.

1. Write web pages and rewrite existing but non-standards compliant web pages to standards compliancy, using X/HTML and CSS

3. Consider the legal framework within which Internet applications are developed and deployed, with particular emphasis on acessibility, intellectual property rights, privacy and other issues.

3. Browser Rendering Engine
Analysis of the various engines, (in)compatibilities, etc
4. Standards Compliant Web Forms
Examination of effective form design, layout and presentation. Accessible Web Forms.

Use of Graded Browser Support, Progressive Enhancement and Graceful Degradation to ensure an effective and accessible user experience irrespective of browser.

Analysis of techniques for improving layout and accessibility using, for example, line-height, CSS tables. Moving elements into and out of the document flow.

TARGET 5 = At least 75% of class contact time will be spent in practical laboratory sessions, of which one hour is unsupervised, in which students are required to solve problems related to a weekly topic. Students work on progressive stages of a topic, from the fundamentals (which are directed) through intermediate (which requires synthesis) to advanced (which requires independent research and assimilation of taught and self-determined learning). In addition, students undertake a practical project which assesses the application and synthesis of knowledge and skills. The project requires the analysis and resolution of a series of problems that inter-relate various dimensions of web standards. This assesses the application and synthesis of knowledge and skills gained through lectures and laboratory work. It also assesses the students' independent research into the problem space and candidate solutions. Each week, students choose one aspect of the topic and undertake independent research, recording their activities and findings. END TARGET. TARGET 7 = A VLE, updated weekly, provides a gateway for students to access learning resources electronically. This site holds copies of the lecture notes, practical tasks and assessment. It also provides audio recordings of most lectures. These may be supplemented by shorter podcasts of related issues, with some of these being provided by students. Some vodcasts (video podcasts) may be used to explain and/or demonstrate some concepts. In addition, links to external electronic materials gives a starting point for students' independent learning. 4. Constructing prototypes
Use and analysis of, for example, wireframing tools, graphic design tools, X/HTML models, etc.

Options for testing, for example groups of users, formal/informal approaches, automated tracking of interaction, testing tools, etc.

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment
This module will be delivered via a weekly one hour lecture supported by a weekly three hour practical laboratory, of which one hour is unsupervised. T&L Targets: Lectures will deliver background, concepts and theory which will be put into practice in the lab sessions. In practical sessions, students experiment with prototyping techniques and concepts, demonstrating their capability and understanding. The successful completion of the portfolio will require individual analysis of the problem space, the development of an appropriate samples and independent research into implementation techniques that supplement those delivered by the tutor. Students will be encouraged to discuss complex problems with each other and to synthesise general solutions. This will provide exposure to collaboration while the need for each student to implement their own detailed solutions maintains individual academic rigour and merit. TARGET 5 = At least 60% of class contact time will be spent on enquiry based work. This will take place primarily within lab settings where the students will work individually or in small groups on a wide variety of problem based tasks. The tasks will also require independent thought and analysis commensurate with a level 8 module and a degree of synthesis and critical evaluation, again appropriate with level 8. END TARGET TARGET 7 = The lab based activities for this module require extensive use of the various technologies that support enquiry and collaboration for example since these technologies are in fact the focus of the content of the module. 3. XML and ColdFusion
Using ColdFusion to acquire, read, write and manipulate XML files.
4. Searching XML
Finding and extracting content within XML files using XPath.
5. The mobile internet
Differences between internet use on mobile and fixed platforms.
6. XML as a common data source

In practical sessions, students will carry out practical work. To support this, students will explore the topics further using online resources including internet searches. Timetabling: One hour lectures weeks 1- 12 in lecture room or theatre with data projector and an interactive whiteboard. Practical labs weeks 1-12 in a suitable room (see specialist resources). T&L TARGET 5 = 67% of class contact time will be in labs, where students gain practical experience of the topics and explore them further through active enquiry, and through project work; students will use some of the lab time work on progressive stages of a case study. The portfolio assessment will be the development of a "case study", an Internet application that uses XML as its core data store. The design and development of the application will comprise several key stages which are marked in class at appropriate times. Students will be asked to reflect on their experience and review the decisions made during the development in a short report submitted at the end of the module. The exam will be closed book and contain a multiple choice section, a short answer section, and one longer "essay" style question.

Brief Description
Practical web and SQL applications are integrated with conceptual database and internet design theory.

Aim
The aim of this module is to provide the student with : a skillset for designing and implementing internet solutions using data stores.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module the student should be able to :
1. Analyse application requirements and design appropriate conceptual database models.
2. Manipulate SQL queries in a database management and internet environment.
3. Evaluate and implement the preliminary planning stages of database- driven internet solutions.

Enhanced Entity Relationship Modelling and mapping, normalisation
2. Normalisation
Using rules of Normal Form to test whether a database is well designed. Comparison of normalisation and ERM.

Data manipulation using the Structured Query Language

Creation of databases using the Data Definition Language
5. Strategic Planning
Analyse the application space to produce effective data and process architectures.
6. Internet Architecture
Explore techniques of ensuring the separation of tiers. Management of sites to allow interface changes without affecting the processing or database.

Design prototypes that illustrate the implementation of the application and prove the satisfaction of requirements.

TARGET 5 = At least 60% of class contact time will be spent on the enquiry and development of key database and internet skills. Tutorials for database design will facilitate group discussions and the consolidation of preparatory work required for these classes. Tasks performed in labs will provide the foundation for students to independently develop skills in SQL and internet technologies. Each student will prepare tutorial materials from directed reading. Brief Description
This module involves completing a software development or other technical investigation project as part of a group of students. Each group will produce a requirements specification document from which a software product or technical solution will be developed. The nature of the project must be relevant to the programme studied by the student.

The aim of this Module is to provide the student with the opportunity to develop a software product or technical solution by applying design, development and evaluation principles in a team environment.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module the student should be able to :

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment
A limited series of lectures, each of 1 hour duration, to be held early in the module. Supervised laboratory session to take place every week for 12 weeks in 2 hour slots. Weekly project meetings must be held in supervised laboratory time. TARGET 5 = 100% of this module will be based upon active enquiry and project work. The assessment will allow students to work as a team to implement a solution to a given problem. All contact time will focus on enabling the students to develop their solutions. This project work will provide the opportunity for both group and independent study. Students will be required to create documentation that demonstrates that their solution meets the requirements of their customer, together with reflection on the product generated and the project as a whole. END TARGET. TARGET 6 = 100% of core subject content will be accessed or synthesized independently. The practical labs will enable students to independently develop skills based upon the framework developed in the Software Project Management module which is used to plan the Group Project in semester 1. In the assessment for this module, students will be assessed on their ability to work as a team to provide a solution to a given problem. Individually, they will be assessed on their own contribution and their critical evaluation of both the finished product and project as a whole. END TARGET. TARGET 7 = A VLE will provide a gateway for students to access learning resources electronically. This will hold copies of lecture notes and assessment specifications. The students will also have access to a range of software which will enable them to develop their applications and to critically appraise the technology. Access will be provided to collaborative working file storage areas so that students can work on their group submissions. END TARGET.

This module introduces the ideas and concepts of programming for the mobile device using the J2ME technologies. The application area used is to be computer games.

Aim
The aim of this Module is to provide the student with : an understanding of the technologies required to develop a application for a small mobile device (mobile phone).

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module the student should be able to :
1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the framework within which software is developed for the mobile phone
2. Develop an application for a mobile device taking into consideration the limitations of the device.
3. Evaluate a mobile application within the context of utilizing the advantages that the device offers and balancing this against the disadvantages of the device.

Indicative Content

1. Mobile Devices
overview of mobile devices, the range of these devices and the effect this range has on the development of an application
2. Cycle Development
The development cycle including the use of emulators, real phones and testing within the development of an application. Deployment to a variety of real devices.
3. Application
Use of the application abstraction to allow easier development. Development of an application.
4. High Level User Interface
Basic control of a mobile device using the high user interface. Use of commands and forms to gain sata from the lient.
5. Low Level User Interface
Use of low level feature to display data to the user. Use of key presses to control a real-time application. balance between low level control and high level ease.
6. Storage
Consideration of the local storage within the phone. The MIDP model of storage and the issues this causes the developer.
7. Commercial Deployment
Discussion of the way an application may be sold or financial gain made from an application. The possibility of selling components and making communities as an alternative to the selling of the game. The relationship between the commercial and technical aspects.

The emphasis will be on student learning the material for themselves. This will largely be carried out during the practical classes. The lectures will discuss concepts. The lectures make up only 33% of the class contact; the remaining class contact is practical class. During the practical class the students are given programming problems to solve. The lecture material provides a framework for the material. Students will need to explore further, by independent study, the taught topics to enhance their learning. The process of object-oriented software design is, by its nature, an active and enquiry-led process in that students will be continuously designing solutions that require to be evaluated and refined in the light of the knowledge and experiences gained. The lecture material presents underlying knowledge and creates a framework for the material; students will need to explore further, by independent study, the taught topics to enhance their learning. The design patterns landscape is large and extensive so that lecture material can only present so much detail and is more concerned with establishing a base framework in which detail can be added through independent study. For example, the module only concerns itself with a few of the standard design patterns but the course text book presents a full set of these and students are encouraged to study these additional design patterns both during the module and in their future practice. Many other external online resources are referred to and available for students to study the details of the framework presented in lectures. This independent study, together with the taught material, will need to be synthesised in order to have a full understanding of the module content; this will allow the student to tackle the practical-based coursework assessment in a meaningful manner. 6. 3D Graphics
Moving on from 2D graphics - 2.5D graphics. 3D graphics overview. The problems for such technology in a mobile phone.

A "behind the scenes" look at what is going on with types and memory management when you execute an object-oriented program. This is then applied to OO programming features for state and behaviour. The .Net Framework and C# language are used as examples.

1. Application Architectures
Explore the 3-tier architecture and techniques of ensuring the separation of these tiers. Management of sites to allow interface changes without affecting the processing or database.
2. Server Side Scripting
Use of at least two server side parsed HTML technologies (ColdFusion, PHP, investigation of a minority option). Evaluation of these different technologies.
3. Effective Use of Databases
Implementation databases to support a dynamic web site. Making effective use of internal database processing.
4. State Management
Use of session, client and application management in dynamic Internet applications. Consideration of different techniques for managing state.
5. Optimisation
Development of publishing models for efficient delivery of content. Use of client side, cached or 'compiled' files rather than server side.
6. Security
Examination of the major threats to the security of web transactions and an analysis of techniques for improving that security.

TARGET 5 = At least 66% of class contact time will be spent in practical laboratory sessions in which students are required to solve problems related to a weekly topic. Students work on progressive stages of a topic, from the fundamentals (which are directed) through intermediate (which requires synthesis) to advanced (which requires independent research and assimilation of taught and self-determined learning). In addition, students undertake a practical project which assesses the application and synthesis of knowledge and skills. The project requires the analysis and resolution of a series of problems within a complex scenario. This assesses the application and synthesis of knowledge and skills gained through lectures and laboratory work. It also assesses the students' independent research into the problem space and candidate solutions. END TARGET TARGET 6 = At least 60% of core subject content will be accessed or synthesized independently. The practical labs enable students to independently develop the ability to determine effective solutions to complex problems. Whilst the coursework is a single summative assessment the project will normally continue from CE0931A.By the end of CE0931A, students will have a structural plan and database for their project, and will have developed a 'static' prototype. They will develop this further during CE0932A to produce an integrated server-side application. Students who have not satisfactorily completed CE0931A immediately prior to undertaking this module will be provided with the core elements of the application design. They can, by virtue of the project based learning approach, undertake the development of the static proptotype in the early weeks of this module, converging with mainstream students by the coursework submission date. Brief Description
This module will provide the theoretical and practical knowledge that will enable you to design your own small language and construct a compiler to process the language.

Aim
This module will provide students with the theory, knowledge and skills that will facilitate the design of a small language and the construction of an appropriate compiler.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module the student should be able to :
1. Design and interpret language syntax specifications with their associated semantics.
2. Critically evaluate potential architectures and components of the compilation process.
3. Design and implement lexical analysis using an FSM.
4. Design and implement syntax analysis using the recursive-descent parsing methodology.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of semantic analysis for a language spec and evaluate the solution.

1. Language specification
Syntax and semantics, EBNF notation, microsyntax, derivation sequences, LL(1) specifications, the LL(1) condition

Scanner role and responsibility, token representation, Finite state machines, using FSM to find tokens, scanner API

recursive-descent parsing, RD primitives, recogniser methods, error handling

semantic analysis in a RD parser, symbol table, Detecting and handling semantic errors, declaration and type conflict errors

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment
TARGET 5 = 50% of contact time is spent on active enquiry or project work. Lectures comprise 50% of class contact; remaining contact is practical work. Practicals present C# case studies in a studio-like learning environment; these are directed by structured activities requiring students to experiment and reflect on case studies. Clinics support student enquiry. The process of software development is, by its nature, an active and enquiry- led process in that students will be continuously designing and implementing solutions that require to be tested, evaluated and refined through critical reflection. END TARGET TARGET 6 = During 75% of module time, students will be working on their own either in independent study or on the assessment. Lecture material presents underlying knowledge and creates a framework for the material; students explore further, by independent study, the taught topics to enhance their learning. The compiler landscape is extensive so lecture material establishes a base framework in which detail can be added through independent study; this is directed through lecture gaps, practical activities and case-studies so that students can focus on those aspects of the landscape that are relevant to the practical application of the recursive-descent compiler methodology. The understanding of complex software systems is an activity that requires reflection and experimentation and this is accomplished through independent study of the case studies and development of the solution to the coursework assessment. Students independently reflect on the Ardkit toolkit and case studies; these are introduced in class, students must study these independently in order to gain full understanding of their design, implementation and application. Synthesis is required to allow the student to tackle the practical-based coursework and examination assessments. END TARGET TARGET 7 = A custom web site provides notes, practical tasks, operational details and links to other learning resources. Students also require to refer to online reference material on the .Net class library, Ardkit framework and C# language in order to fully utilise the programming concepts presented in class. The 'Ardkit' compiler toolkit has been developed in-house to support the teaching; reference and supporting documentation is provided online. Case-studies require critical reflection and experimentation. END TARGET

1. Reflect on a large scale development project or investigation, outlining the tasks carried out and the rationale for the decisions made;
2. Devise and realise appropriate methods of presenting project results to a wide audience in an interesting and informative manner

1. Reporting
Formats for professional presentation of results to wider audiences e.g. academic papers and posters;
2. Reflection
Reflection on the product/ investigation, evaluation of the product/investigation against project aims and key performance indicators.
3. Presentation
Use of appropriate presentation techniques to present a technical piece of work to a wide audience that may or may not contain technical experts.

Brief Description
Students define and plan a large-scale software development project or investigation. The project will have a different emphasis depending on the programme on which the student is enrolled,eg Computing students will develop a software application or carry out an internet development project; Computing and Networking students will carry out a practical investigation with a networking theme or an internet development project;Ethical Hacking students will carry out a practical investigation with an EH theme. WDD students will aso carry out a practical investigation.

Aim
The aim of this Module is to provide the student with experience of defining and planning a software engineering development project or an in- depth investigation.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module the student should be able to :
1. Propose a project topic and the scope of development work or investigation;
2. Review and interpret application or investigation requirements;
3. Analyse aspects likely to pose a technical, conceptual and/or legal challenge, and evaluate strategies and/or technologies to manage those challenges;
4. Design an evaluation procedure and associated key performance indicators to measure project success and to describe how Graduate Attributes will be met;
5. Develop a project plan, with clear aims and objectives, relevant to the topic of investigation, with contingency for identified challenges.

1. Honours Project Framework introduction
Orientation to an established framework to guide the project documentation process. The framework indicates deliverables and provides templates and ancillary documentation as appropriate.
2. Legal Issues.
Copyright, intellectual property, outline of other legislation.
3. Project scoping and Requirements Definition
Identify using appropriate techniques, including requirements elicitation and literature surveying as appropriate, the problem definition and detailed project requirements
4. Project planning
Using appropriate methods to develop detailed plans to ensure completion
5. Project risks
Identification of areas of risk / challenge
6. Professional, Legal and Ethical Issues
Using generic documentation, provided in the framework, evaluate the ethical issues associated with the project. Consider any Intellectual Property and Legal issues associated with the project.
7. Appraisal and evaluation
Consider a variety of solution methods for a given problem, establish a set of evaluation criteria, evaluate these methods against the criteria and appraise the reuslts within the context of the project
8. Report writing skills
Structuring of a report of a specified length, aims and objectives of each section, use of references.

Weekly meetings with the project supervisor to receive guidance on project progression

Brief Description
This module will look at XML technology in an application framework. Students will be introduced to generic XML technologies and will be asked to apply these tools to a particular application. The mobile internet is based upon XML technology and as part of the module the students will be exposed to issues of mobility in applications.

Aim
The aim of this module is to provide the student with a critical understanding of XML technology and the application of this specifically in the mobile Internet.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module the student should be able to :
1. Demonstrate the use of key XML technologies and evaluate the appropriateness of these technologies within an a given application.
2. Demonstrate and critically evaluate the use of XML Web Services as a tool in the design of (mobile) Internet Applications.
3. Critically evaluate design of mobile Internet applications and particularly the role of XML in the delivery of the application.

1. XML Definition
The syntax of XML markup. Use of DTD and XML Schema to validate XML. Use of namespaces within a large XML based system.
2. Querying XML
XPath, XQuery.
3. XSLT
Transformation of XML markup into an appropriate output format using XSLT.
4. XML as a common datasource
Use of XML as a common datasource to deliver a variety of application both for the mobile, Internet and SMS services. Evaluation of the issues involved in providing data to different client devices
5. Mobile Internet Languages
Use of a specific language to deliver content for the mobile Internet. Consideration of the need for another different XML based language.
6. XML Web Services
Understand the principles of XML web services within an Internet architecture. Building and consuming XML web services. Use of Web services as the basic for the design of mobile Internet applications.
7. Mobile Internet
Issues concerning the design and development of Mobile Internet Applications especially matching the application to the device. Case study: using RSS feeds

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment
There will be a weekly lecture to set out the learning to be achieved in the week. Students will be expected to explore the topics via internet searching and practical work. The main learning for the students will be through practical experience of the topics. Target 5: 67% of class contact consists of practical labs where students consolidate, expand and apply knowledge, mainly through active enquiry. Target 6: at least 50% of core subject content will be accessed or synthesised independently. In the coursework, students are required to synthesise knowledge and skills in developing a mobile application. The coursework report assesses the students' ability to independently source and reference relevant material and integrate this with existing knowledge. Target 7: the module is fully supported through the university VLE; students use a variety of software development environments such as XmlPad, ColdFusion, etc, and a mobile emulator.
