Studying at Abertay

Intensive Pre-sessional English Course

30 July - 31 August 2012

The Intensive English course runs during the summer and is designed for students who intend to study for a degree at the University of Abertay Dundee but do not meet the language requirements of the University.  Successful completion normally allows students to progress onto their degree programme.

The course is aimed at students whose first language is not English and who want to improve their study skills and their English before starting their degrees. The Intensive English course is also open to students who wish to take a summer course in English for academic purposes, without continuing their studies at Abertay.  Classes are taught in groups of no more than 14.

Please note: students who do not successfully complete the course may not be eligible to progress onto their degree progamme.

What does it offer?

During 20 hours each week the course helps to prepare you for academic study in Britain with classes on the following topics:

  • Writing for academic essays, exams and dissertations
  • Reading skills to help with academic books, journal articles and internet sources
  • Listening during lectures and discussions
  • Speaking, including giving presentations and taking part in seminars

Additionally we look at:

  • Developing critical thinking and independent learning
  • Academic vocabulary
  • Note-taking and research skills

General English language improvement:

  • Communicate easily, naturally and accurately with other students and native speakers, in and out of class
  • Grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation development

These core topics will be given as integrated lessons and skills will be developed with authentic tasks designed to replicate real coursework.  Students will research and write an essay, and take part in academic discussions and deliver a presentation.  There will also be authentic weekly academic lectures from lecturing staff on business, computing and other topics relevant to students on the course.

Social and cultural events

Dundee is a friendly and lively city with a rich history and a huge variety of countryside and seaside nearby: castles, beaches, mountains and lochs are all within easy reach.  We organise free weekly trips, which in the past have included such places as Scone Palace, the historic city of St Andrews, the Scottish Deer Centre, a whisky distillery and other local places of interest.

The fee includes the cost of afternoon visits and trips.
