The Certificate in English for Undergraduate/Postgraduate Studies is a full-time English course. Students can enter in September (for two semesters) or in January (for one semester), depending on their level of English.
This programme is aimed at students who want to study in the UK but do not have the necessary English language requirements, or who feel that they would like to spend some time getting used to academic practice and culture in the UK, before starting their academic studies.
The course is designed to develop the necessary academic language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening to enable the student to process and understand the type of language they will encounter during their studies.
The course places much emphasis on independent learning and students are encouraged to use the skills learned in the class to complete tasks based on their academic discipline. This course also places great emphasis on study skills such as note-taking, seminar preparation and participation, presentation skills, time management, and exam preparation.
Teaching will take place in small groups of no more than 14 where students will have the opportunity to practise the skills they are learning. Class activities will be a combination of independent and group work, to ensure that students become familiar with the way they will be expected to work when progressing to further studies.
The classes are very learner-centred, and will require students to participate fully and actively. Class time will be 20 hours per week, with students expected to also spend time on independent study to cover the 4 language skills.
Successful completion of this course will allow students to progress directly onto their degree programme of choice at Abertay, provided they meet the academic requirements of the University.
September start (2 semesters)
IELTS 4.5 or higher (or equivalent).
January start (1 semester)
IELTS 5.5 or higher (or equivalent) will be automatic. IELTS 5 (with no score below 4.5) will be considered on an individual basis.
