The Gym

The newly refurbished gym at Abertay University offers everything you need to cover your training needs. Whether you want to practice your Olympic lifting or are coming to the gym for the first time, the friendly gym assistants are happy to help. With new platforms and bars including safety squat bar and shrug bar, Eleiko plates and squat rack the gym is not lacking in top quality equipment. In addition to this the team of gym assistants have huge amounts of experience with weight and cardio training and can supply the gym members with custom programmes to help you get the most out of each session. Last year Abertay Sport funded 15 students in achieving their YMCA certified level 2 Fitness Instructor and Level 3 Personal Trainer, as a result Abertay Gym can now offer its members personal training.

The Centre has full shower and changing facilities and can be used between lectures and tutorials.

To make payment for a membership go online to Abertay University online store (onlinestore.abertay.ac.uk) or pop into the Support Enquiry Zone (SEZ) located on the bottom floor of the library.

Gym Location

The gym is located on the ground floor of the Graham Building and can be accessed through Old College, round the corner from the Copyshop, or from the bottom right corner of the rear car park.

Membership Benefits

Gym Inductions - book in at the gym reception desk for an introduction to the facility, the rules for the gym and how to use each of the items of equipment. This can be delivered on a group or individual basis depending on how confident you feel about using the gym. If an induction is not completed, the user accepts that the gym is used at their own risk. We urge all gym users to complete an induction to make the most of their gym experience

Fitness Consultations - our Gym Assistant staff are on hand to offer any advice or support that you may need. Whether you want to tone up a little, lose a bit of weight or are training for the next marathon feel free to run any questions you may have past the staff in the gym

Exercise Programmes - a consultation may lead to a prescribed programme of activity to help you towards your goals, there are also pre-made programmes available from the gym reception.

Recreational Sport - there are a series of staff events organised throughout the year providing the opportunity for staff to try a sport they may never have participated in before. Successful events to date include curling, archery and climbing please make any suggestions to the Sports Development Officer. There are also a range of recreational sports festivals that students can participate in. Get in touch with the Sports Office to find out more.

Sports Clubs - search under Sports Union on the above menu for details on all the student sports clubs or information on how to set up your own club.

Membership Fees

Abertay Sport can also offer its students and staff an on campus gym with membership from as little as £30 per term. The facilitates can cover all training requirements, from technical Olympic lifting to first time gym members. We also run a wide range of exercise classes aimed at all levels of participation from high intensity spinning classes to easier lunch time toning sessions.

**If you are a sports union member you will get a £10 reduction in your gym membership as shown in the prices above.

 

Payment options

Payment for memberships can be made at Abertay's online shop. If you are unable to pay using the online store then cash payments can be made at the Cash Desk in the finance office (3rd floor Kydd building). Please keep your receipt and produce it when you first use the Centre. You must also swipe in and out of the Centre each time you use the facility.

 

Healthy Body, Healthy Mind

The gym offers a range of exercise classes throughout the week to provide the University with as many opportunities to participate in sport and physical activity as possible, and to promote a healthy workplace. Whether you are a beginner or a fitness fanatic, the gym assistants can accommodate you in the classes. They are the perfect way to get in some exercise during your lunch break, or at the end of the day. Either pay on the day or block book through the online store to receive a discount.

Stress Buster

Get rid of those Monday morning blues and mid-week stresses with this boxing based class. Use gloves, pads, boxing dummy, and kettle bells.

Spinning

A high energy, calorie burning cardiovascular workout. Challenge yourself through hills, flats and sprints to reach your desired goals.

Bums, Tums and Thighs

A half hour class that focusses on toning these key areas through a variety of body weight and resistance exercises.

Tae-bo

A total body fitness system that incorporates martial arts techniques, including such as kicks and punches. 

Step Aerobics

Combines rhythmic aerobic exercise with stretching and strength training with the goal of improving all elements of fitness.
