Graduation stories – mature student success

18 December 2015

Jennifer Brand

Mature student Jennifer Brand is now working for a globally successful company, overcoming dyscalculia to graduate with an LLB degree in law.

She now works for a company co-founded and run by several Abertay University graduates.

We caught up with Jennifer – and her proud dad, also an LLB graduate from Abertay – at the recent graduation to hear more about her success story.

What’s your current job, and what does it involve?

“I am a Business Support Executive for Tailwind Solutions. I act as liaison between the company and customers processing orders, dealing with shipping logistics, answering any questions, and I also review and redraft contracts and agreements and deal with other legal queries.”

Can you tell us more about the company and its founders?

“Tailwind Solutions is based in Dalgety Bay, Fife. Founded in 2006, the company has grown exponentially with sales all over the world, channel partners in over 40 countries and customers in all sectors where face-to-face card payments are important.

“Customers range from top brands like Farmfoods and Schuh in the UK to taxi firms and ticket kiosks and our products can be seen in locations like Grand Central Station in New York to leading petrol station brand ZEnergy in New Zealand.”

What's been the best part about studying at Abertay?

“As a mature student, one of my biggest considerations was support given to students who had been away from learning for a while, and Abertay certainly provides that.

“Student Services were fantastic. They helped enormously by ensuring I received a full diagnosis of learning difficulties which had plagued me during my school years, and helped set up the necessary support for studying and in exams. I'm severely dyscalculic, but still managed to pass tax law!”

Do you have a message for students starting at Abertay this year?

“For all students starting Abertay this year: work hard, but also enjoy yourself. And remember that age is no barrier to learning.”
