Abertay University student Chelsea Sievewright has been named Computer Science Undergraduate of the Year.

Chelsea was named the winner at an awards ceremony in London at the weekend, receiving her prize from broadcaster Fiona Bruce.

Chelsea said: “I still can't quite believe I won because I was up against some great competition. But I have continually worked hard throughout the last four years at Abertay and it feels great to be rewarded for it all at the end of my studies.

“I have had continual support from my lecturers regarding all my extra-curricular ventures and have had great exposure to industry professionals through the connections Abertay has.

“I have taken full advantage of the services offered by the Careers Development Centre and I thoroughly enjoyed my time completing the Principal’s Award in second year.

“The overall support I have received at Abertay has been fantastic and has really helped me achieve everything I have so far.”

Chelsea was Abertay’s first student champion for Interconnect, the gender equality network, and organised a successful networking event for female STEM students attended by 40 people including academic staff and women from industry.

She recently delivered a talk at the Scottish Parliament about her time working with Interconnect and her experiences as a woman in technology. Chelsea is also a member of her local BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, committee.

Natalie Coull, Ethical Hacking Lecturer, said: “All of Chelsea’s lecturers at Abertay are delighted she’s won the Computer Science Undergraduate of the Year Award.

“She’s been a fantastic student, particularly in how she has championed the importance of encouraging girls and young women to pursue careers in computing and technology. We look forward to watching her professional career develop.”
