BAFTA New Talent nominations for two Abertay teams8 April 2015
Two teams of Abertay University students have been shortlisted for the games category at the British Academy Scotland New Talent Awards 2015.
The BAFTA winner will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony held at The Arches, Glasgow, this Thursday (9 April). The evening is hosted by acclaimed author, broadcaster and journalist Muriel Gray.
Blank Canvas (Ellen Brown, Irvine Cruikshank, Vince Finlayson, Stuart Tait and Mark Thompson) is nominated for Revenant, where you play as a little girl exploring an abandoned mineshaft along with the ghost of a young boy, solving puzzles together to find the girl’s lost friend.
The girl can control objects in the real world, while the ghost can control the spirit world, requiring them to work together to succeed. The game was created at the 48-hour Global Game Jam, hosted by Abertay University.

Five Pixels (Ross Davies, Chris Dickson, Jess Hider, Vimarsh Raina and Amy Stevens) is nominated for Seek, is an experimental game where the player has to use a tablet as a ‘window to the world’ similar to virtual reality, but without using a headset.
They have to search for their friends on a forgotten island, using new skills that the friends give them to discover secrets about the land. Each friend reveals a new way of navigating the island, including sonar location and being able to see back into the past.
Stuart Tait from Blank Canvas said: “We were in shock when we first heard. It's a great achievement for us to be considered for such a prestigious award. We still can't believe it, there is a lot of great new talent out there and we are just humbled to be considered.
“Abertay has taught us all the fundamentals of making games, which has allowed us to explore our chosen fields and given us the opportunity to experiment.
“For every module we complete we learn something new which we take into our new projects. Game jams just amplify this so we are really grateful to Abertay for hosting these events.”
Amy Stevens from Five Pixels said: “It is incredibly exciting to be nominated for a BAFTA New Talent Award. We've had a couple of friends joke that we should start building a trophy cabinet!
“We're really happy that our game was well liked enough to be nominated and are looking forward to spending the awards night with Blank Canvas, the other nominated team from Abertay, and the other nominees.
“In terms of creating Seek, the past experiences we had developing games, either with the Abertay Game Development Society or as part of our courses at Abertay, were invaluable.”
Seek was originally created for Dare to be Digital, the world’s leading game development competition for students.
Applications for the 2015 competition are currently open at the Dare to be Digital website.
