Abertay and Dundee University battle it out in the annual VarsiTay challenge
Around 500 sportsmen and women from Dundee’s two universities will compete today (Wednesday, March 11) for the Tay Varsity Challenge Trophy.
Twenty contests across sixteen different sports will take place on the pitch, court, course and gym, culminating in the men’s basketball match at 4pm at the University of Dundee’s Institute of Sport and Exercise.
The eighth annual challenge will see the two universities battle it out for bragging rights, with Abertay determined to extract revenge from Dundee, who are the current holders of the trophy.
After the dust settles, the teams will meet up for some well earned refreshments and to celebrate the friendship between the two universities.
Immediately after the prize giving ceremony, the “Varsity Afterparty” will kick-off at Liquid, where teams and supporters from both sides are welcome.
The showcase basketball match always attracts a healthy crowd of supporters from both sides, and the presentation of the Tay Varsity Challenge Trophy will follow this game.
DUSA TV will film the Varsity games, and a highlights programme will be screened at the union throughout the evening.
Speaking ahead of the event Ali Bell – Sports Development Officer at Abertay University – said:
“Varsity is one of the highlights in Abertay’s sporting calendar with over 250 of our students involved.
“Like previous years I am sure it will be a great event and I wish all Abertay teams the best of luck!”
