International businesses mentor Abertay students25 February 2015
Global companies will be mentoring students at Abertay University this week as part of the three-day Innovation for Global Growth event.
Launching on Wednesday 25 February, Innovation for Global Growth gives students the opportunity to develop solutions to real business challenges set by organisations including Heineken, RBS and Tokheim.
Working in small teams, the students have to apply their studies to practical problems currently being faced by these businesses before pitching their solution back to the company.
The three days are focused on developing students’ entrepreneurial skills and giving them the opportunity to experience some of the challenges and pressures of a real working environment.
Charlie Malone, event leader from Abertay University’s Dundee Business School, said: “Innovation for Global Growth has developed into a major annual event at Dundee Business School and this year we’ve opened it up to more students than ever before, giving undergraduates the chance to pitch ideas to major global companies.
“We’re always looking at ways of making our teaching and learning practical and business-focused. Facing the pressure of a commercial environment in a safe way is a very exciting experience for our students.
“For the companies themselves, such as Heineken and RBS, it lets them collect fresh new ideas for challenges they’re currently facing as well as showcasing our most promising graduates who will be the business leaders of the future.”
Siobhan Hazlett, International Trade Executive at the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, said: “SCDI supports Abertay University’s Innovation and Global Growth Week and looks forward to engaging with students exploring innovative solutions to complex international business issues.
“SCDI recognises the importance of this initiative in helping to drive forward Scotland’s international agenda while developing a global outlook in Scotland’s future workforce.”
The organisations setting challenges this year include Heineken, the NHS, Perth and Kinross Council, RBS, Thorntons Solicitors and Tokheim.
Innovation for Global Growth is supported by CEED, the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, and Scottish Enterprise.
