Global Game Jam takes over Abertay University

23 January 2015

Global Game Jam 1

A 48-hour game jam will take over Abertay University this weekend, with around 150 students, lecturers and professionals collaborating to design brand new games.

The Global Game Jam is an international event where game developers are set a theme to inspire their games. In 2014 the theme was ‘We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are’, and in 2013 the theme was ‘The sound of a heartbeat’.

Last year over 4000 new games were created in one weekend, with 488 locations hosting game jams in 72 different countries.

The Global Game Jam is focused on encouraging collaboration and creativity and is not a competition.

Ryan Locke, Abertay University lecturer and event organiser, said: “Game jams are a very exciting way of bringing people with different creative skills together, and working together to build something new and exciting in a short period of time.

“The Global Game Jam is a particularly exciting event as it’s focused on creativity rather than competition, and each year’s theme always pushes our participants to use their skills in new, expressive ways.”

The jam starts at 6pm on Friday 23 January and runs until 6pm on Sunday 25 January.

Ryan Locke added: “Although it’s a two-day event we don’t encourage anyone to work through the night, as it’s not a responsible or safe way of working. Anyone working long hours will always see the quality and creativity of their work rapidly decrease.

“The jam is all about fun and creativity, harnessing the phenomenal talent of Dundee’s game development community. I can’t wait to play the dozens of weird and wonderful new games that will be developed this weekend.”

The participants at Abertay part of the jam will be tweeting with the hashtag #AMGjam
