3D imaging experts to discuss techniques at Abertay7 October 2013
International experts will gather at Abertay University today (Monday, October 7) and tomorrow to discuss how 3D and 4D imaging techniques can be used to advance understanding of porous media related processes, such as carbon sequestration and enhanced oil recovery.
Recent developments in imaging techniques offer substantial benefits with respect to the non-invasive study of porous media structures (such as soil and rocks) and the workshop aims to raise awareness of how and where these techniques can be used, as well as to share knowledge to address current challenges.
Keynote lectures at the workshop will be delivered by a strong field of international speakers including Dr Dorthe Wildenschild (USA), Professor Hans-Joerg Vogel (Germany), Dr Anders Kaestner (Switzerland), Professor Cino Viggiani (France), Dr Branko Bijeljic (London) and Professor Philippe Baveye (Abertay University, and Rensselaer, USA).
The main organiser of the workshop is Dr Simona Hapca from Abertay University’s SIMBIOS Centre.
Dr Hapca has been leading the program on image analysis at Abertay, which has resulted in software that can be used in a wide range of disciplines, including soil science, geoscience and biological sciences.
The workshop offers a platform where these cross-disciplinary methods can be discussed.
Speaking ahead of the event, Dr Simona Hapca said:
"The 3D Imaging and Applications in Geosciences workshop promises an exciting two-day programme, combining plenary talks and short communications, with discussion sessions and software demos.
"It is a great opportunity for the SIMBIOS Centre, as it will help develop new collaborations which will promote worldwide the research into 3D soil imaging that we have developed here at Abertay."

The two-day workshop is sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) as part of the Porous Media Processes and Mathematics (PMPM) network initiative.
PMPM is a UK-wide research network focused on all aspects of porous media flow at the interface between engineering, applied mathematics, applied probability and scientific computing.
It offers UK researchers, from both academia and industry, a platform for novel scientific interactions, and aims to create a flexible and active UK research community that can respond to large-scale societal and environmental challenges such as the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the Fukushima nuclear disaster, and fracking.
