125 years of history – Abertay University calls for old photos and stories5 September 2013
Ahead of the 125th anniversary of its foundation as Dundee Technical Institute, the University of Abertay Dundee is calling for graduates, staff and their families to contribute old photographs and stories of university life.
The anniversary will be celebrated on 15th October 2013, 125 years after the opening was marked with a speech saying that “through the foundation of this Institute...the ladder of learning has been raised aloft in Dundee”.
To celebrate the occasion, Abertay is collecting photographs of university life and stories about the successes and life-changing achievements of graduates from any of its 125 years.
The aim is to draw a picture of life as a student across the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, and share this through the Abertay website, Twitter and Facebook.
Professor Nigel Seaton, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Abertay University, said: “Across three different centuries, this institution has held a proud position in Dundee, offering industry-relevant education that is open to everyone.
“From the 1880s training skilled staff for the city’s thriving jute industry to today’s focus on subjects including business, computer game development, ethical hacking and forensic science, we’ve always delivered applied, modern education.
“As we prepare to celebrate 125 years of helping people of all ages and all backgrounds realise their ambitions and potential, we’re very keen to hear from graduates, staff and their families.
“Collecting photographs and stories of life through the ages at Abertay, and sharing these online, seems like a fitting way to celebrate the achievements of everyone who has taught or studied here over our 125 years.”
The university is particularly keen to hear from descendants of the students who took classes in the institution’s earliest years in the 1880s and 1890s.
