National contest finals for Abertay business students13 June 2013
A team of business students from the University of Abertay Dundee will tomorrow (Friday 14 June) take part in the UK finals of the prestigious CIMA Global Business Challenge.
Abertay University is the only university to reach the UK finals twice, after a team won the national contest in 2011 and proceeded to the world finals in China.
The four students – David Swan, Daniel Stewart, Nicola Stewart and Danielle Trainer – are all studying BA Accounting with Finance through a partnership between Abertay and Adam Smith College in Fife.
Helen Smith, Lecturer in Accounting at Abertay, said: “I’m delighted that Abertay is the first university to reach the UK finals of the CIMA Global Business Challenge twice, continuing our strong run across a range of very competitive business contests.
“This team of students are exceptionally bright and hard-working, and they’ve shown a real aptitude for solving real-world business problems.
“Part of the Abertay approach is setting students the same challenges that companies face – and here we see just how well that learning process works.”
John Elliott, Curriculum Head from Adam Smith College, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our students who have done extremely well.
“We have a long established link with Abertay University and this recent student success is testament to the great resources which support the degree alongside the hard work put in by our students and staff.
“We wish the team every success with the final in London.”
From 57 teams taking part in earlier rounds, just four have been selected for the UK final.
The final is being held in central London, organised by CIMA in partnership with Barclays, sponsored by Tesco and supported by Milkround.
CIMA (the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) is the world’s largest and leading professional body of management accountants.
The 2013 world final will take place on 28-29 August in Johannesburg, South Africa.
