New flexible MBA course launched

23 May 2013

MBA relaunch 2

A new-look, flexible Master of Business Administration (MBA) course was launched today (Thursday 23 May).

The team at Abertay’s Dundee Business School has radically redesigned its flagship MBA programme – taking on board the views of national and international employers in all sectors, and delivering the new course in flexible four-week modules.

At a breakfast event for local business leaders today the university also confirmed it is upgrading to Platinum membership of the Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce.

Professor Sabine Hotho, Head of Abertay University’s Dundee Business School, said: “Working directly with businesses and the public sector has taught us that busy professionals need complete flexibility to pursue their professional development – committing to two years of evening classes just isn’t feasible for many people as their work demands continually change.

“I’m delighted that we’ve been able to introduce an MBA that is broken down into convenient four-week blocks of learning, with a number of starting points throughout the year, and with a choice of classroom, project and work-based learning.

“This allows both senior managers and aspiring professionals to tailor their own programme, covering all key areas of business and management, and developing their own specialisation.

“The MBA is still such a prestigious qualification, but the modern world of business has changed dramatically – and universities need to change what they offer to match the needs of the next generation of business and public sector leaders.”

Each four-week module consists of four intense days of professional seminars, minimising the time required away from work. The modules can be completed individually for professional development, and flexibly built into the full MBA qualification.

Jim Pickett, President of Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce, said: “I’m delighted to welcome the University of Abertay Dundee into Platinum membership of the chamber on this important day.

“Our Platinum members support the chamber’s long-term vision because it aligns closely with their own ambitions for their organisation and the wider city region. They recognise the value of being seen to be at the heart of a successful and dynamic local chamber of commerce.

“By taking the views of national and international businesses into account in the design of the new flexible MBA, the Dundee Business School has done exactly what employers have been calling for and I’m sure this innovative course will be a great success.”

The new MBA also allows students to tailor their learning to their specific business sector, through a live business project that is individually designed between each student and their professional development advisor.

Students will also participate in the annual Innovation and Global Growth Week during which major businesses challenge Abertay’s MBA students to solve their real and current business challenges.

Innovation for Global Growth 2013 featured senior managers from major firms including Axeon, Cairndene, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Harris Tweed, Heineken, Michelin and Stoneridge Electronics, each working directly with students to develop their business innovation skills.
