The online campaign for Dundee to be the UK City of Culture 2017 has been backed by the Principal of the University of Abertay Dundee, Professor Nigel Seaton.

We Dundee is a community campaign led by local organisation Fleet Collective. At the We Dundee website members of the public are asked to answer one simple question – ‘What surprises you about the city?’

The campaign is collecting signatures at an ever-increasing rate, with over three-quarters of the original target of 2017 supporters now received.

Professor Seaton, who moved to Dundee last year to take the post of Abertay University’s Principal, gave his backing the week before the official bid document for UK City of Culture 2017 is submitted.

We Dundee word cloud

Professor Seaton said: “I’m delighted to be backing the We Dundee campaign for our beautiful, creative city to be awarded UK City of Culture status in 2017.

“Since moving to Dundee it has been a genuine pleasure to see just how much creative activity there is here, from the computer games and digital art students at Abertay, to the great work coming out of Duncan of Jordanstone, the thriving local music scene and much more.

“And with the V&A at Dundee project, there really has never been a more exciting creative and cultural time for Dundee.

“I’m calling for staff, students and alumni of Abertay University to back the bid for UK City of Culture, and for everyone who loves Dundee and cares about our city to get involved too.”

Lyall Bruce, We Dundee campaign organiser from Fleet Collective, added: "It is really exciting that the city has taken to the We Dundee project in this way and that we have the support of Professor Seaton and Abertay University.
"For too long Dundee has not shouted about itself and its great cultural heritage and resources. This really feels like the start of an amazing journey for our city and its people, and we're confident that Dundee is a very strong contender for UK City of Culture 2017."

Professor Seaton’s submission on the We Dundee website reads:

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) What surprises me about Dundee? Perhaps I could begin with what doesn't surprise me - the friendliness of the people, for which Dundee is rightly famous. I have lived in many places across the UK and in the US and I never felt so welcome as a newcomer. What does surprise me is the compactness of the city - everything is within a few minutes' walk - and especially the glorious surroundings. Dundee has the most attractive location of any British city, from the always changing views over the Firth, to the Angus and Perthshire countryside. I've been here for eight months, and I already feel like a Dundonian.
