Abertay University appoints Mark Batho as Vice-Principal

23 April 2013

The University of Abertay Dundee is pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Batho as its new Vice-Principal (University Services).
Mr Batho is currently Chief Executive of the Scottish Funding Council, the national body responsible for funding teaching and learning provision, research and other activities in Scotland's colleges, universities and other higher education institutions.
In his current role he is accountable to the Scottish Parliament for the combined annual budgets of £1.6 billion allocated to the Scottish Funding Council, and is responsible for ensuring the delivery of the Scottish Government’s policy objectives for further and higher education.
In his new role at Abertay University, which he will take up at the beginning of September, Mr Batho will be responsible for strategic planning and resource allocation, and for the University’s support services.
Professor Nigel Seaton, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Abertay University, said: "My colleagues and I are very pleased that Mark Batho will be joining us at Abertay.  Mark brings a wealth of experience in higher education – as Chief Executive of the Scottish Funding Council, and through his work with the Scottish Government – and shares our ambitions for Abertay as a university that is both rooted in its community and has global reach.  As Principal, I’m very much looking forward to welcoming Mark to the University in September."
Mark Batho said: “I am privileged to be joining Abertay University at this time, I am already familiar with the University and its ambitions for the future and I am very much looking forward to joining the team that will make those ambitions a reality.”
Mr Batho has held the post of Chief Executive of the Scottish Funding Council from 2008.
Between 2003 and 2008 he was Director of Lifelong Learning for the Scottish Government, with overall responsibility for delivery of government policies on higher education, further education and skills.
Mr Batho has held a number of previous posts including Director of Social Justice for the Scottish Executive from 2000, and Assistant Director of Finance in the Scottish Office and subsequently for the Scottish Executive from 1999.
