Students pitch business ideas to experts at Abertay University

29 March 2013

Students at the University of Abertay Dundee will today (Friday 29 March) pitch their proposals for a direct marketing campaign for Leisure & Culture Dundee to industry experts.

Working in teams of eight – covering subjects including , , and – the students were challenged to create a marketing plan, including a website and mobile app.

Leisure & Culture Dundee set the brief for the students, who will today present their ideas exactly as if they were a company pitching for a commercial contract.

Other organisations giving feedback on the student pitches include Dundee Science Centre, MTC Media, Radio Tay and TalentScotland.

Dr Jason Turner, the project leader from Abertay University’s Dundee Business School, said: “Giving students the opportunity to work with peers from very different courses, all facing real commercial pressures, is an incredibly tough challenge – but one which is very exhilarating as they put all their studies to practical use.

“The students have already learned the tools to plan a marketing campaign or build a website, and putting them in front of industry experts helps them to understand the pressures of real-life commercial environments in a safe, enjoyable way.

“Some of the marketing plans the students have created for Leisure & Culture Dundee are of an excellent, professional standard. We’re all hoping some of today’s ideas can be put to use promoting Dundee, particularly as we all wait for the City of Culture announcement later this year.”

Specific tasks the students faced included designing audio and animations, producing a website, outlining the features of a mobile app, plan TV or radio advertising, and outline Leisure & Culture Dundee’s target audience.

Leisure & Culture Dundee Lead Trustee for Marketing, Gary Robinson, said: “Having been involved with Dundee Business School at Abertay for a number of years I am acutely aware of the standard of work produced by the students.

“This is an ideal opportunity for Leisure & Culture Dundee to have professional pitches presented to us by a group of highly-talented individuals, who will hopefully benefit from some of their work being put into practice at some point in the near future.”

The student teams were challenged to create an integrated online and offline direct marketing campaign to raise the profile and market Leisure & Culture Dundee to the local Dundee community, nationally and internationally.

Leisure & Culture Dundee’s remit includes advancing the arts, heritage, culture and science in Dundee through engaging the public through a variety of projects and facilities.

Working in partnership with Dundee City Council the organisation works on leisure and sport (which include sports centres, Camperdown and Caird Parks, sports development), libraries, and culture (which includes The McManus, Caird Hall, Mills Observatory).
