Abertay to host gay marriage debate26 February 2013
The University of Abertay Dundee will be hosting a debate on the topic of equal marriage this Wednesday (February 27th).
The panel of four speakers - which will include former Dundee city council education convener Liz Fordyce - will each be given five minutes to speak on the motion:
“Is society ready for equal marriage?”
Those appearing on the panel will be:
Tom French – Policy Coordinator at Equality Network Reverend
The Reverend Leslie Barrett – Abertay University Chaplain
Liz Fordyce – Former Convener of Education at Dundee City Council
Dr Jason Annetts – Sociology lecturer at Abertay University who has researched and published on the sociology of the family and on gay liberation movements.
The debate will follow the format of a Question Time debate and will be chaired by Scott McBurney, Executive Committee member of Abertay's Students' Association.
Once each speaker has put forward their case, the panel will be asked questions that have been submitted by Abertay students via Facebook.
Questioning will then be opened up to the audience.
Speaking ahead of the debate, Scott McBurney said:
“This promises to be a lively debate, as the subject is a contentious one.
“Dr Annetts and Tom French will be arguing in favour of the motion, while Liz Fordyce and Reverand Leslie Barrett will be arguing against.
“As many will know, Liz discontinued her membership with the SNP after 42 years over her feelings on this issue and I’m sure all four panel members will speak with feeling on this topic.
“Reverend Leslie Barrett will also be answering "no" to our question, "is society ready for equal marriage" however we will have to wait for the debate to learn his reasons for this, because the Church of Scotland, of which Leslie is a member, does not have a cemented stance on the issue.
“The debate is open to one and all, so please do come with any questions you would like to ask, as we will be taking questions from the audience and will try to cover as many of them as we can.”
The debate will take place in the Main Lecture Theatre at Abertay University and will start at 5pm.
All are welcome.
