Making the most of your time at university

As soon as you begin your studies at university you are developing the kind of skills that are so attractive to future employers:

  • communication
  • team work
  • absorbing and analysing information
  • organisation, planning and time management
  • working under pressure and meeting deadlines
  • problem solving

But being at university isn't just about getting a degree. Of course, it's important to do well as you can academically, but employers are also interested in the variety of skills you can pick up in other areas, such as:

  • student activities
  • getting involved in clubs or societies, the students' union, or becoming a class rep
  • work experience

It is vital to get some work experience during your time at university, related or unrelated to your course, paid or unpaid.

Social life

It's not just about propping up the bar. You have to make an effort to get on with all different kinds of people. If you are sharing accommodation you will constantly be using the kinds of skills that interest employers, such as, communication, flexibility and problem solving!

Remember: employers want students to be able to tell them what they have learned and how they have developed.
