Health service

Emergency

EU students studying in Scotland are entitled to NHS treatment from the beginning of their stay and, if they bring their spouse and children, they are also entitled to the same NHS treatment as soon as they arrive in the UK.

Entitlement is the same as for anyone who is ordinarily resident in the UK.

The free services provided by the NHS are:

  • consulting a general practitioner (GP) or doctor and visiting a GP’s clinic
  • treatment from an NHS hospital (both emergency and non-emergency treatment)
  • family planning services
  • treatment of certain communicable diseases
  • compulsory psychiatric treatment

The following NHS services are not free:

  • NHS prescriptions
  • NHS dental treatment
  • NHS wigs and fabric supports
  • sight tests, glasses and contact lenses
  • travel to receive NHS treatment under the care of a consultant
