New starts 2010
These web pages have been prepared especially for students from our partner universities in Europe who will be studying with us in the academic year 2010-2011 through the
EU Articulation Scheme.
If you have already made an application to study with us you will be sent a student ID and password which allows you to access your Applicant Portal (OASIS) via the University’s intranet. You can track the progress of your application and see important information about booking your accommodation, important dates and details of the plans for your first few weeks at the University.
If you do not yet have a password, or need to remind yourself of your student ID and password, or you just want a quick summary, then read on.
In the paragraphs below you will find out about:
Obtaining your student ID number
When you first apply online to study at the University, you will be sent an e-mail which acknowledges your application and provides you with a student ID and password which allows you to access your Applicant Portal (OASIS) via the University's intranet. Through the Portal you can check on the progress of your application and the personal details we have recorded.
Then, when you are given an offer of a place and you have accepted that offer, you will be able to book accommodation online and also carry out the first part of the registration process (see below) which all new students must do before they attend their first lectures or seminars.

How to book university accommodation
When you have been made an offer of a place and have told us that you accept that offer, you will then be able to make arrangements for your student accommodation in Dundee. You can of course make your own arrangements to rent somewhere to stay in Dundee whilst you study with us or you can ask our Accommodation Office for assistance.
On our
accommodation pages you will be able to:
- find out about renting accommodation in the private sector
- find out about the University’s student accommodation
Once you have accepted your offer of a place you will be able to apply for accommodation. You will be contacted by the Accommodation Office electronically with information on how to apply online. Once you have applied you will receive an automatic email response, confiming that your application has been received.
Once you have been allocated a room you will receive another email advising you to log onto OASIS, to view and accept the terms and conditions of the accommodation offer. You will also be asked to pay a deposit (£400 for 2010/11) and to confirm how you intend to pay your rent. You will be given seven days to accept the terms of the lease and a further seven days to change your mind. Once this acceptance is received, you will be sent an email confirming that your reservation is now complete.
You can cancel your booking if you notify the Accommodation Office before 1 July. A cancellation charge of £175 will be deducted from your deposit. We regret that university accommodation reservations already confirmed on or after 1 July cannot be cancelled.
How to upload a photograph of yourself
When you have been made an offer of a place and have told us that you accept that offer you can
upload an electronic photograph which the University requires during the registration process (see below).
Registering as a student
Each year all new and returning students must officially register at the University before their classes begin. To make registration as efficient as possible - and reduce the time you spend queuing - we have split the process into two parts:
PART ONE:
Online registration which you complete (as much as you can) before you come to the University of Abertay Dundee
The online registration process begins when we have received confirmation of successful completion of your current year of studies. An online registration box will then appear on your Applicant Portal page (which you can access with the username and password already sent to you). The online process is very simple - you will be asked to confirm your personal details (name, address etc) and the Abertay degree programme you will be joining in September.
If you cannot complete the online registration process before you arrive at Abertay, please do not worry - you can complete both parts of registration in person at your registration event when you arrive. There will be many willing helpers to assist you.
If your degree programme allows you to choose option modules you will be asked to select the ones you prefer. However, when you arrive in Dundee you will have an opportunity to review that choice and, with the guidance of your academic tutor, you will be able to change your options within the first three teaching weeks.
PART TWO:
Individual meeting with registration staff in September
Later (mid- to late August) you will be sent by email an invitation to attend a personally scheduled registration event in Dundee. This event will take place during Orientation Week (see below). At this event we will check that we have recorded your personal details correctly and that you are being registered for the correct degree. You will also be given an email address and a card providing access to the library.
When you should plan to arrive in Dundee
Many students choose to come to Dundee several weeks before the start of the academic year. This gives them a chance to have a holiday and explore the beauty of Scotland’s magnificent tourist destination, and also to become more comfortable speaking English on a daily basis. If you want to do this, ask our
Accommodation Office about renting a room in a student apartment during the holiday period.
But whether you have a summer holiday (or a summer job) during the holidays, all EU Articulation Scheme students must be in Dundee by 6 September ready to participate in the International Welcome Week activities (see below) which start on 7 September.
International Welcome Week
The International Welcome Week (commencing 7 September) is a week of activities specifically designed for students from outside of the UK who are new to Dundee. The week includes guidance on the different styles of teaching and learning you will experience at UAD. There are also visits and talks on key issues which will hep you to become comfortable living and studying in Dundee. Details of the various visits and other activities will be posted on the website in August.
In addition, you will be asked to attend a Students Award Agency for Scotland (SAAS) documentation session in which you will be shown how to fill in the SAAS form that all new Scottish and EU undergraduate students must complete so that they are not asked to pay a tuition fee.
Orientation Week
Orientation Week (commencing 13 September) is the week in which all new students complete the registration process for their courses, meet their tutors and classmates, and begin their academic, social, and cultural life at UAD. Detailed timetables of lectures etc will be provided during Orientation Week.
What you need to bring with you
If you have not uploaded a photograph, please remember to bring a passport-sized photograph when you come to Dundee. You will need it during the registration process.
As a student participating in the EU Articulation Scheme, you do not need to bring lots of documentation with you. Your home university will have approved your participation when they signed your EU Articulation Scheme application form and confirmed your examination results. However, you might find it helpful to bring a copy of the examination results from your home university so you can show your tutors the sort of subject grades you already obtained.
