Council tax enquiries

1. I've received a council tax demand for the period when I was a student; can I just ignore correspondence from the council?

The rules surrounding council tax exemption are complex. You shouldn’t ignore correspondence from the council relating to council tax, even if you think the information they have is incorrect. Contacting them to discuss any demand for payment or bills is the best approach.

2. Does the University tell the councils who is a registered student?

Each year, three times per year, we report to Angus, Dundee City, Fife and Perth & Kinross Councils on registered students within identified postcode areas. Even so, you may still have been required by the council to complete an individual exemption / discount application form. For other councils, the University does not provide regular reports and you will have been required by the council either to provide evidence of student status or to complete the exemption / discount application form, and bring it to Student Services, Level 1 Library for verification. You are responsible for ensuring any verified form or letter is returned to the council.

3. What if a council contacts you directly for information?

If a council contact us directly for information on a former student through the agreed procedures, we will aim to verify information requested.

4. Can I get a letter for the purposes of confirming a period of study?

Former students should apply for an Official Letter via the Abertay Online Store - https://onlinestore.abertay.ac.uk/ This type of information cannot be released by telephone, fax or email. An official letter will normally be issued within ten working days. Please note that in busy periods, particularly between June and October, it can take longer and you should ensure that you request such documents in good time.

5. Is there anything else I should know?

Yes. Please note that if you successfully complete a qualification your end date will be reported as the last date of teaching in the session in which you have completed. For example if you obtained a BSc (Hons) in 2009/0, your end date will have been reported as 28 May 2010. You should be aware that this is the date on which any student discount or exemption from council tax will end.
