The graduate market is becoming increasingly competitive and UK employers expect students to do more than just get a degree while at university. They want candidates to develop skills such as team working, problem solving, communication skills and commercial awareness that will help you fit into the world of work. So, by planning ahead and gaining valuable work experience, you can develop the skills and experience required to impress any future employer!
When should you start thinking about all of this? Well, it is never too soon to get started – don’t leave it all until your final year. Developing the right kind of skills for the employment area you are aiming for can take time and careful planning, so start the ball rolling now.
During the academic year, students have the opportunity to attend various workshops in areas such as job hunting, making applications and interview skills, as well as participate in practice sessions on psychometric and/or personality testing. Students can arrange to make an appointment to speak with a Careers Adviser as well as attend one of the weekly drop-in sessions – where no appointment is necessary.
If you are a postgraduate, college link or a European Erasmus student, you will have less time to get to know the University. It is therefore really important that you are aware as early as possible of the services on offer from the Career Development Centre and the benefits we can provide.
Come in and find out more about the various graduate vacancies, internships and opportunities that we advertise. Many employers who recruit interns and graduates have early closing dates (some as early as November/December) so please make sure you get your application in early - don't miss out!
Take the opportunity to meet our Careers Advisers at one of our presentations in Orientation Week when we will tell you more about the services, help and guidance we can provide.
If you want to discuss your career options in depth, you can make an appointment to speak with a Careers Adviser or attend one of the weekly drop-in sessions when no appointment is necessary.
