The McManus QuizTrail can be downloaded free for iPhone, iPod and iPad.
Art meets technology with the launch of a new free phone app to promote The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery & Museum.
Created by the Connected Set, and supported by the University of Abertay Dundee’s Prototype Fund for launching new digital games and new businesses, QuizTrail tests visitors to the McManus and players at home to identify artworks and solve fun puzzles.
The Connected Set launched their first free QuizTrail game for Tate Britain in London. Players in both games get to win prizes to collect from the gallery gift shops.
The Abertay Prototype Fund is supporting the creation of jobs and new companies by investing in commercially promising digital ideas that cannot find funding elsewhere. To date, 46 companies have been awarded up to £25,000 each.
Lord Provost Bob Duncan, chair of Leisure and Culture Dundee who operate The McManus in partnership with Dundee City Council, said: "We have always been keen to use interesting and innovative ways of attracting visitors of all ages to experience for themselves some of the fascinating and beautiful items on display.
"This new app will help us to do just that and the fact that the technology has been supported by funding from one of our local universities makes it so much more exciting and appropriate."
Jake Cassels, Project Director at The Connected Set, said: "Without this funding from Abertay's Prototype Fund we wouldn’t have been able to produce this game for The McManus.
“The scheme provides an excellent stimulus for small companies, like The Connected Set, to realise our ideas and a produce something to be proud of, which we can then showcase to generate more business.”
Paul Durrant, Director of Business Development at Abertay University, said: “The Prototype Fund has helped dozens of companies test out new business ideas and create jobs, launch games and attract hundreds of thousands of pounds of private investment.
“QuizTrail is a real success story as the first Tate Britain game proved the fun format really drives visitors, and gives them a richer experience in the gallery. Now the Connected Set have proved they can apply this to any art gallery or museum.”
