A University of Abertay Dundee student has played a starring role in the GB Deaf Football Team, just months before the European Deaf Football Championships.
The European event will be held in Odense, Denmark next year and the GB Deaf team are halfway through their qualifier against Israel Deaf. Abertay student Zach Aitken (19) played an impressive role in Team GB’s 4-1 first leg home win at Motspur Park, Fulham FC’s training ground in south-west London.
In what was his debut with the GB team, Zach, a second year Sport and Exercise Science student from Lundin Links in Fife, scored one of the goals and could well have had more but for questionable refereeing and heroic goalkeeping. Hopes are high for both him and the squad as a whole with such a large advantage to take to Tel Aviv later this month. Following that, Zach is looking forward to the European Futsal Championships in Switzerland in November with the Scottish Deaf International Football Squad.
Zach said, “I feel really proud and privileged to be representing both Scotland and Great Britain in football and really lucky to have been selected for both. I am also very grateful for the support that the University of Abertay Dundee Elite Athlete Programme has shown to me over the last two years. They have helped immensely by providing funding for the travelling, accommodation and so on but have also provided fantastic feedback and encouragement, not just in sport but in my studies which is just as important to me.”
Meanwhile, Peter Burgon, Sports Development Officer said, “Abertay University is proud to support Zach through its Elite Athlete Development Programme. He has clearly worked hard to establish himself within the Scottish Deaf Team and to play and score for the GB Deaf Team is reward for his talent and dedication. With the forthcoming European Deaf Football Championships in 2011, we are excited by what Zach can go on to achieve in the future.”
