Young entrepreneurs at the University of Abertay Dundee are set to battle against each other for business glory, and the chance to compete on an international stage.
Some 19 students from Abertay’s Dundee Business School are taking part in the two-day European Business Masters Cup on Thursday 4 and Friday 5 March. The second and third year students are simulating the demands of a pressured working environment – and the tough decisions modern business professionals need to make.
Abertay is the only Scottish university represented in the competition, which is run by Stuttgart Media University in Germany. The winning Abertay team of students will travel to Stuttgart to compete in the finals on 2 and 3 December 2010, against the winning teams from Rome, Luiss, Nancy, Linz, Yverden and Stuttgart.
Helen Smith, Lecturer in Accounting at Abertay, said: “This is a very exciting event for our students, letting them put into practice everything they’ve learnt in their business degrees. And we’re very proud to once again be the only Scottish university involved in the competition.
“Giving students opportunities to gain real work experience is an important part of our work at Abertay. With the growing economic pressures, we know that graduates with real-life business experience will be best placed to compete for jobs.”
Working as small companies, the Abertay students will be required to fight against other teams to protect their market position. As well as the challenges of running the business, the teams will be required to pitch advertising campaigns, give a presentation to the shareholders and undertake other special challenges.
Dr Hartmut Rösch, from Stuttgart Media University, added: “The Business Masters Cup is an important step in the development of young business professionals. The calibre of the Abertay students is always fantastic, and we look forward to the winning team returning to Stuttgart for the international final.”
