Abertay welcomes research quality findings

Abertay University has welcomed the findings of the Research Assessment Exercise 2008, published today (18 December 2008), which reveal that it is the best modern university in Scotland for research in environmental sciences, law and psychology.

Commenting on the findings, a spokesman for Abertay said:

“The RAE figures show that we have significantly improved our overall performance since the last RAE in 2001. According to the most authoritative individual subject tables published today (by Research Fortnight magazine) we are the best modern university in Scotland for Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences, and second overall among UK modern universities. We have also become the best modern university in Scotland in Law and in Psychology.

“In total, around 35% of our academic staff were included in these submissions, and we’re delighted that so many of them were judged to be producing research of international quality. In particular, 10% of our staff in Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences are described as “world-leading” and a further 75% described as producing “international” quality research. Similarly, 80% of our Law staff and 65% of our General Engineering staff are judged to be working at international level.

“These are very significant achievements for a modern university that has never had access to the levels of funding on which older institutions have built their research reputations.”
