28 November 2008
Almost 300 academic awards, including one honorary degree, were conferred today (Friday, 28th November) at the University of Abertay Dundee’s 2008 Winter Graduation Ceremony.
About 600 graduates, friends, families and members of staff thronged Dundee’s Caird Hall this morning for a ceremony conducted with full academic pomp and pageantry.
In his Graduation Address, Professor Bernard King, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University, told the graduates that their new Abertay degrees equipped them for the knowledge economy.
Professor King said: “The knowledge and skills that you have gained during your time with us were developed with the specific aim of equipping you for the knowledge economy. I am confidant that they will be of enormous use to you and that you will go on to make a positive, disproportionate and very real impact on the world in many different ways.”
Professor King also said that the 2008 academic year had been “yet another year of more success and achievement by students, staff and stakeholders.”
He highlighted the immensely successful Dare to be Digital competition, now the leading global computer games design competition for students. He also praised the University’s graduate business incubator Embreonix which has produced over 100 graduate businesses in the last seven years.
Professor King said that Abertay is “fully engaged with Scotland’s strategy of pooling the more conventional research strengths of its universities.” Professor King cited the success of the Tayside Institute for Health Studies, also Abertay’s leading research into police-community relations and the leading role of Abertay in the Scottish Alliance for Geoscience, Environment and Society.
During today’s ceremony, an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws was conferred on the Right Honourable Lord Brian Gill, Lord Justice Clerk of Scotland.
Professor King concluded his address by congratulating all the graduates and wishing them every success in the future: “I have every confidence that you will go on to make a positive, disproportionate and very real impact on the world in your many different ways,” he said.
