Dundee schools battle for Information Literacy prize

Teams from three of Dundee’s secondary schools will battle it out today at the Information Literacy prize-giving at Abertay University.

The sixth year pupils, from Menzieshill High School and Baldragon and Braeview Academies, have spent the last two months preparing their presentations for the annual competition which is now in its eighth year.

The teams were tasked with responding to a fictional request from Dundee City Council to give their opinions on plans for a new secondary school in the area. They were asked to consider learning and teaching, architecture and design, technology, community use and environmental impact and present their ideas to a panel of judges.

Each team will be judged on how well they can support their ideas with research and their ability to explain and present their findings and demonstrate thorough use of resources.

Pupils attended a one-day intensive research skills course at the university at the beginning of September and have been working on their research and presentations for two months with the help of their school librarians.

Hilda McNae, Senior Information Specialist at Abertay University said: “This project has proved really popular with pupils and teachers alike. It’s a good opportunity for the final year pupils to gain practical experience on researching and referencing in a Higher Education environment which will stand them in good stead in their post school education.”

The winning team will be awarded with the Abertay Information Literacy inaugural shield and each member of the winning team will receive a gift voucher for Borders bookshop.

Paul Clancy, Quality Improvement Manager (Educational Development Service) Dundee City Council, sat on the judging panel along with senior staff from Abertay University’s Information Services team.
