NEWS RELEASE
25 January 2008
White Space Solutions at the University of Abertay Dundee is hosting the first ever webcast given by the Learning Society in Scotland initiative.
State-of-the-art technology at Abertay will enable the presentation, entitled Unlocking Potential - A Paradigm Shift in our Education System, to be broadcast live to invited outside audiences across Scotland.
The whole event will also be available to view on a website afterwards.
White Space Solutions’ Marketing and Business Development Manager, Grant Alexander, heads up the team organising the Learning Society event.
Grant said: “The Learning Society approached us to come up with an idea of how they could extend the audience for this important debate on the state of education in the 21st Century. Of course we were very pleased to provide a solution.”
Director of the Learning Society in Scotland, Gordon Hall said: “The initial broadcast will be looking at our education system in context of the brilliant work being done in the Scottish Borders.
“It will show the very significant benefits in working with children in developing their thinking and learning skills – their cognitive ability.
“It develops the child’s love of learning – with benefits such as an increase of emotional intelligence and ensuring that a far higher percentage of children stay engaged in the education process.
“The project, however, will raise the question as to how able is the education system to learning from this successful project. Will it learn and move forward or will it return to the status quo?”
Grant Alexander added: “The external audience will be made up of invited guests who will be able to watch the presentation and contribute to the debate thanks to Abertay’s state-of-the-art digital media facilities and, of course, knowledge.
“We will provide the technical and human resources to film and broadcast the event in real time. The groups watching via the internet will have the added bonus of being able to join in with the question and answer session using live messaging software.
“Abertay has some of the most advanced digital media and broadcasting facilities in the area and we’re only too happy to make sure they are put to good use through projects such as this. The potential is here for live and interactive global broadcasts.”

NOTES TO EDITORS
The presentation – A Paradigm Shift in our Education System – will offer an insight into the work of the Feuerstein Project.
It will be held at the University of Abertay Dundee on Monday 28 January 2008 from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.
The presentation will be given by Billy O’Neill, Anne Theresa Lawrie and Jenny Chaneag as part of the Learning Society Initiative.
It will focus on the need to unleash each individual learners’ potential by moving away from instruction towards working with learners to develop thinking and learning skills.
The theme of the Learning Society is to recognise that society comprises individuals plus the connections between individuals; i.e. the systems that bind us together. Examples being the education system, or the justice system or the systems used within organisations.
There is extensive opportunity to develop a momentum for the continual improvement of these systems.
