08NEWS RELEASE
8 January 2008
The University of Abertay Dundee is having a facelift for the New Year.
A pilot project at the University’s Kydd Building will see some of the old cladding removed and replaced with a modern, highly insulated alternative which will improve energy efficiency in that part of the building.
The building will also be fitted with a new energy management system designed to further improve the building’s efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint.
The projects will cost over £500,000 and mean the University will make significant energy - and financial - savings.
Head of Estates and Campus Services at Abertay, Ian Simpson said: “These improvements are part of a £3 million refurbishment programme we have undertaken in this financial year.
“They were approved after a thermal imaging survey carried out in 2007 showed that the University could make significant savings and reduce energy waste.
“The cladding will give part of the building a whole new look and the pilot scheme will give us a better idea of the technical and logistical issues involved in recladding the remainder of the building.
“The energy management system we are installing will also help by allowing greater control over the heating system.
“This means staff and students will be working and studying in a more comfortable and energy efficient environment.
“Scientists from the Abertay Centre for the Environment (ACE) will use the projects as case studies as part of their programme of support to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).
“We also have a further phase of remodelling planned for the teaching and learning facilities.”

NOTES TO EDITORS
The improvement programme at the University of Abertay Dundee is funded by the University using grants allocated by the Scottish Funding Council.
The environmental and sustainability aspects of the project (cladding and energy management system) also received funding support from European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of an Abertay Centre for the Environment (ACE) project.
ACE scientists will use these projects as case studies for their programme of support for Small and Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs).
The thermal imaging survey was carried out in 2007 by Dundee company IRT Surveys, one of the UK’s specialists in this field.
