Bring on the Battle of the Bins

NEWS RELEASE
20 December 2007

Christmas is the season of peace and goodwill to all – it’s also the time when we throw away more packaging and waste more food than at any other time of the year.

Sony award-winning broadcaster Lesley Riddoch never shies away from the uncomfortable truths and this week is no different.

Lesley’s guest on Riddoch Questions on Friday (21 December 2007) is John Crawford – a waste management expert with 40 years in the business.

John believes the only way to persuade industry to use less packaging, to convince householders to recycle more and make the government think again about incinerators and landfill, is for Scottish councils to make fortnightly bin collections.

Will this waste management specialist get his message out that fortnightly rubbish collections won’t mean overflowing bins, bad smells and more vermin?

After fortnightly collections brought on a change of council control in East Dunbartonshire how will he persuade council leaders to back him?

And what about the reports that some of our carefully separated and recycled rubbish ends up in landfill anyway?

The battle of the bins begins at 1.00pm on Friday 21 December on Radio Scotland 92.4 to 94.7 FM and 810 MW. To make your voice heard call 0500 929 500, email Lesley@bbc.co.uk or text 80295.

Riddoch Questions is broadcast live from the state-of-the-art studios at the University of Abertay Dundee via BBC Scotland headquarters at Pacific Quay in Glasgow.
