NEWS RELEASE

Put Your Beer Mat In A Box And Strike Gold
31 October 2007

Students at the University of Abertay are being asked to pop beer mats in a golden box as part of a business plan competition.

But beer stained mats are no good, we want the ones with pure gold ideas scribbled on the back.

The beer mats are part of the Scottish Institute for Enterprise Business Plan Competition and they could win a budding entrepreneur £10,000 worth of business support.

Jennifer Wagner from the Scottish Institute for Enterprise team based at Abertay said: “We’re launching the local round of the competition this week and I’m hoping that Abertay students’ entrepreneurial spirit will mean we’re swamped with ideas.

“All you have to do to enter is write down an idea on the back of a beer mat and drop it in one of the gold boxes we’ll be placing ‘round campus.

“Anyone competing in the first round will be contacted and asked to complete a short form explaining their idea in more detail.

“Once the initial ideas have been developed the entries will be judged on viability, innovation and need by a team of local business men and women and lecturers from Abertay.

“At this stage we have iPod Nanos and cash prizes up for grabs so there’s every reason to put pen to beer mat.”

Once all the entries have been sifted three will be chosen to represent Abertay in the national competition where the prizes top more than £10,000.

There’s lots of advice on creating a business plan and refining strategy throughout the competition and the region’s SIE business advisor will be on hand to help.

It’s a great way to get free business advice and to gain business experience.

The competition will be launched on Friday 2nd November 2007 so grab a beer mat and get scribbling.
