NEWS RELEASE
Wider Access Workshop at Abertay
30 October 2007
One of Scotland’s leading experts on young people in social care is coming to Abertay on Wednesday 31 October 2007.
Dr Graham Connelly from the University of Strathclyde’s Faculty of Education is the opening speaker at a continuing professional development workshop being held at the University.
Dr Connelly will provide the background on the typical circumstances and additional needs affecting young people leaving care and entering higher education.
The workshop is aimed at college and university staff from across Tayside who are involved in admissions or pastoral support, including personal tutors.
The second speaker is Dave Innes who manages Dundee City Council’s Throughcare and Aftercare Team. He will speak about the support that local authorities should provide to care leavers when they go on to further their studies.
Abertay was recently awarded the prestigious Frank Buttle Trust Quality Mark in recognition of the University’s outstanding commitment to supporting care leavers in further education.
The workshop is part of a project funded by the Fife and Tayside Wider Access Forum and is being led by Abertay’s Student Academic Support Team.
