Captains and the King look forward to sporting success
16 March 2007
Abertay University’s growing sports prowess in a variety of sports has been celebrated at a reception for the Captains of the many teams now competing regularly in local and national contests.
The Abertay Sports Captains presented an official Abertay football strip to Professor Bernard King, Principal and Vice-Chancellor. As well as thanking him for the University’s support, they declared themselves and their teams match fit for even more success in the year ahead.
There are now 21 teams or clubs competing regularly under the auspices of Sport@Abertay across 15 sports: Gaelic football, netball, hockey, golf, rugby, basketball, football, badminton, jujitsu, skydiving, snowsports, pool, Tae Kwon Do, karate and ultimate frisbee. In some sports, there are separate men’s and women’s teams.
The Sports Captains at Abertay run their clubs and teams in conjunction with Sports Development Officer Ian Lowe. They are responsible for the day-to-day work of organising coaching and training sessions, match preparation, team transport and liaison with their respective league and championship authorities.
Abertay teams have had considerable success in the current academic year, with the men's & women's hockey teams winning the Scottish League 3A, and the rugby team winning league 3B. All three of these teams qualified for the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) Plate Championships. The women's football team qualified for the BUSA trophy championships.
