Abertay University’s golfing team will be stepping out in style on the greens this year, thanks to generous sponsorship from Dundee-based IT company Caledonian Computer Solutions (CCS).
Brothers Gary and Craig Leaver, chairman and chief executive respectively of CCS, visited Abertay’s Student Centre to present the team with brand new jackets.
Team Captain Steven Hume and Vice-Captain Neil Pirie were on hand with their team-mates to accept the jackets, which are high quality items embroidered with the CCS and Abertay logos.
Gary Leaver said: “CCS is delighted to be sponsoring the Abertay golf team this season. We were already aware of Abertay’s international reputation in the field of computing, especially computer games and digital media, and we were very impressed with the well-organised and business-like approach that Steve and Neil showed when they pitched the sponsorship idea to us.
“The team has a successful track record, and of course Abertay has produced at least one Scottish international golfer – Stuart Wilson – in recent years. We hope that our new jackets will inspire the team to even greater success this year.”
Two members of the team, Steven Hume and Kerri Harper, received prestigious bursaries from the Royal & Ancient Golf Foundation last November. The bursaries are awarded to to assist the education and development of talented golfers during their course of study and to enhance the standard of university golf.
The bursaries are only open to golfers with a handicap of plus one or better for men or three or better for women. Both plan on using the bursary to for pay entry fees for upcoming tournaments.
Steven captains the Abertay Golf Team whilst Kerri finished 2nd in the 2006 British Universities Sports Association Championships and is a member of the Scotland Women's Winter Training Squad.
The Abertay Golf Team will compete at the Scottish Universities Sport Golf Championships in Lossiemouth in the first week of April and are looking to improve on their top 4 finish last year.
Established in 2002, CCS was created to provide IT solutions, hardware, software and support for clients across the UK. The firm’s skilled technical and support staff specialise in the design and implementation of business networking solutions and web based solutions including ecommerce.
Professor Mike Swanston, Vice-Principal (Academic Development) of Abertay University, said: “This is a very generous sponsorship by CCS, and we are delighted to accept. CCS is one of the new breed of small-to-medium hi-tech companies that is helping to forge a new future for Dundee in the knowledge economy, and exactly the kind of business that Abertay aims to work closely with the maximise the potential and achievement of the regional economy.
“I am sure that our golf team will live up to the confidence that both we and CCS have in them, and go on to achieve even greater success this year.”
