Doors open for Debbie following graduation from Abertay University
10 January 2007

For Debbie Yong Sheng Kit, a degree from the University of Abertay Dundee has opened up more than just the prospect of a rewarding career.

The 22-year-old from Petaling Jaya graduated BA Honours in Accountancy and Finance last year, and now works as an audit assistant in an audit firm in her home town.

She studied the course at SEGi College in Petaling Jaya, one of thousands of young students in Malaysia who have taken advantage of the 12-year-old partnership between SEGi and Abertay.

Says Debbie: “The course was most inspiring as it exposed me to ideas and learning that I would not have come across elsewhere.

“I was especially interested in the Environmental Accounting and Social Accounting modules, which were an eye-opener in being so different from what you study on a normal Asian accounting course. The course also included a module on Ethics, which is so important in the financial accounting realm nowadays.”

Debbie started her job right after graduating, but the learning hasn’t stopped: she is also studying part-time for her CIMA professional qualification.

“The SEGi/UAD programme in Malaysia is recognised as a viable prerequisite to various professional qualifications, particularly CIMA,” she says.

A highlight of the graduation ceremony Debbie was being awarded the University of Abertay Dundee Technical Education Prize for the best student studying part-time on an Abertay course in Malaysia.

“I felt very much honoured to receive the prize,” said Debbie. “I am stunned and amazed how God works in my life.”

Debbie is full of praise for the course: “Instead of just memorising and reiterating model answers, I enjoyed my studies by paying full attention in tutorial, understanding the concepts and applying the knowledge in my revisions and during examinations.

“Moreover, the dedication of both SEGi and UAD lecturers stirred my interest and further motivated me to excel,” she adds.

“Notably, this award is not for me, but for those who have encouraged and helped me to arrive at the achievement. My sincere appreciation goes out to my family, boyfriend, friends and lecturers.

“To all of them, a big ‘Thank you’ for leaving footprints in this wonderful phrase of my college cum university life. Their contribution drives me to gain new experiences in the accounting and finance field and ultimately, in realising my ambition of becoming a well-rounded lecturer that would impact the next generation.”
