Dundee is a historic city set in a beautiful, sunny location on the east coast of Scotland. The West End of the city is popular, with its historic 19th century buildings and protected conservation area status, as are outlying towns such as Broughty Ferry and Carnoustie to the east.
Dundee also benefits from a central geographical location which means you are always a short distance from other great locations within Scotland, from the North Sea shore to spectacular glens and forests to the country’s historic capital Edinburgh and Glasgow the vibrant shopping district.

Dundee, although being a compact city, has a very active art community. In 1999, Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA) was established and has since been extremely popular, it houses an acclaimed gallery, cinemas that put on a consistent programmes of popular and independent films, a succession of exhibitions and studio space for a wide range of artistic classes, it attracts thousands of visitors each year.
The Dundee Rep Theatre, home to Scotland’s only full time acting ensemble and contemporary dance company is well known for producing eclectic programmes of theatre, musicals and dance throughout the year – as well as its famous panto! Touring productions, comedians and jazz nights are also very popular.
The city has a range of historically significant museums, covering everything from textiles to Antarctic exploration.
Verdant Works is a world-renowned living museum which has been praised by Nobel-prize winning economist Paul Krugman in the New York Times, charts the chequered history of Dundee’s jute industry. This forged much of the city’s industrial growth and made jute ‘barons’ fiercely wealthy, while their staff often lived and worked in squalor.
Also down at the water’s edge, Discovery Point hosts one of Dundee’s most treasured landmarks – RRS Discovery, the boat Captain Scott first sailed to the Antarctic in. Recently waterproofed again, this historic boat can be toured and even hired out for meals and weddings.
The historic McManus Galleries in the city’s centre reopened in 2010 after an extensive restoration to restore its Victorian finery, and holds impressive collections of much of the art bought by the city’s wealthy jute factory owners as well as hosting travelling exhibitions.
The Victoria and Albert Museum V&A at Dundee, a new centre of 21st century design for Scotland and the world, will occupy a prime site at the heart of Dundee's redeveloped waterfront and will open in 2014.
The V&A project, which the University of Abertay Dundee is a member of, will give the city a world-class home for touring art and design exhibitions. V&A Director Sir Mark Jones, an Honorary Graduate of Abertay, has already said the scheme will allow unprecedented access to the museum’s extensive collections.
Dundee has a developing music scene and quite a few venues in which to play now. Two big bands to come out of Dundee recently include The View and The Law. But everything from pop, rock and folk is emerging from Dundee. Dundee also hosts the popular music festival, The Dundee Jazz Festival and The Dundee Blues Bonanza.
Dundee has an award winning pedestrianised city centre that has a compact location, it is home to the Overgate and Wellgate shopping centre’s. The City Quay features several factory outlets and designer labels at a lower price.
The local Farmer’s market which takes place on the third Saturday of the month from January to December, provides a showcase for a wide range of locally cultivated produce, with everything from organic vegetables to fresh eggs, and baking to beef.
The city has a host of popular restaurants which include, Thai, Indian, Italian, Greek, Turkish, French and many more. No matter what time of the year, Dundee has something to offer either on land, or water. Dundee has 59 parks which cover 4,000 acres in total, one of it’s most famous parks is Camperdown Park that features children’s play park’s, wildlife centre and hosts interesting events throughout the year that will suit all ages. The parks are also cyclist and jogger friendly and if you are enthusiast you will be able to enjoy great views of the city and the green cycle routes.
If Golf is your sport then you are spoilt for choice, as there are 50 courses within a 30 minute drive of Dundee, these include St Andrew’s, Carnoustie and Gleneagles and several public courses within the local area.
The city also homes several public sports centres which allow you to make use of swimming pools, all-weather track, fitness suites, an artificial ski slope, ice rink, and indoor climbing. Watersports has also become popular in Dundee on the River Tay, you will frequently see yachts, speed boats, jet ski-ers and can join the local sailing club.
