About Abertay

Hannah Maclure Centre

What happens in the HMC?

Hannah Maclure Centre The University of Abertay's Hannah Maclure Centre works with contemporary and interdisciplinary cultural producers and artists from the UK and abroad, as well as supporting teaching activity and developing opportunities with staff and students. The centre is uniquely placed as a cultural facilitator, working in conjunction with a range of university divisions and research projects, alongside developing partnerships with external institutions. It houses a multi functional art gallery, a 72 seat cinema and a cafe bar.

Located on the top floor of the Abertay Student Centre, this informal space provides its visitors with a chance to engage and interact with exhibitions showcasing a diverse range of visual outputs.

Projects are scheduled around a year in advance, concentrating on artists based in Scotland and internationally. Primarily artists and curators are invited to develop projects with the centre and this selection is developed by the University's Cultural Projects Officer in consultation with a highly active Cultural Development Team.

Media residency

Along with exhibitions, projects, special talks and events, the HMC also supports a new media residency. In partnership with the Scottish Arts Council's Visual Arts Department (with a £10,000 bursary) it is open for visual artists resident in Scotland. The new media residency plays a significant role in recognising the importance of artists embracing new technologies and new media, providing a strong academic context and access to the wider public through the Hannah Maclure Centre programme, giving it not only an important local relevance, but also a UK national and international relevance.

Each year the Residency runs for a nine-month period from October to June. Located in White Space, the artists selected for the programme have access to the newly developed integrated learning and research environment. While on the residency programme, the artists undertake an identified process of personal and professional development, get actively involved within the Abertay environment and make presentations to research staff and students about the nature and objectives of their work. At the end of their time with Abertay the artists have the opportunity to exhibit in the Hannah Maclure Centre.

Cinema

The cinema and performance space is a busy, multi-functional facility and is well used by the university community as well as external clients to screen films, hold symposiums or meetings, and host performances. The auditorium seats a maximum of 72 people, has wheelchair access and hydraulic seating that can be pushed back, allowing the space to also host performance-based events.
